Otorhinolaryngologists (also known as otolaryngologists or ear, nose and throat or ENT Surgeons) are surgical specialists who diagnose, evaluate and manage a wide range of diseases of the head and neck, including the ear, nose and throat regions.
A complete ENT examination includes inspection of the face, ears, nose, throat and neck. We generally screen for hearing loss and we use pressure testing to examine the eardrum for fluid (pneumatic otoscopy or tympanometry).
In general, surgery takes a few hours—enough time for the surgical team to place the patient under anesthesia, introduce the nasal endoscope and other necessary tools into the sinuses, remove the tissue that needs to be removed, and prepare the patient for recovery.
Direct laryngoscopy uses a tube called a laryngoscope. The instrument is placed in the back of your throat. The tube may be flexible or stiff. This procedure allows the doctor to see deeper in the throat and to remove a foreign object or sample tissue for a biopsy.
